Current Trends: How to Use AI to Rev Up Your B2B Writing Business

4 minute read

This is the first in a series of three articles about amazing trends that can boost your B2B business growth, especially in content marketing.

I’ve identified trends that are worth exploring for B2B writers — and, well, are just easy to implement or embrace.

The first noteworthy trend has caused a lot of consternation, but there’s no turning back the tide.

While my iPhone and laptop are old models and I’m definitely not up-to-date on the latest tech anything, I’m excited about ChatGPT and AI (artificial intelligence) content generators.

They can help you kick-start the writing process and enhance your copywriting business.

AI Tools for Writers

While many writers fear it will replace us and we’ll lose all our clients, others like Nick Usborne, Brian Clark, and Guillermo Rubio are embracing its power to save time. I am too.

ChatGPT exploded on the scene recently and I’ll talk about that in a minute. But AI tools for writers aren’t new.

For instance, Copy.ai, which is geared for copywriters, agencies, and content creators, helps you generate short-form content like social media posts, email subject lines, and email marketing content.

Another popular artificial intelligence tool, recommended for quality long-form content as well, is Jasper. Jasper is on the expensive side but is SEO-optimized which can get you more traffic and leads. Both have plagiarism checkers.

About ChatGPT — The New Kid on the Block

ChatGPT is a free chatbot that can generate answers to your questions and even refine them as you continue to input questions. It was released for testing to the public in November 2022 and people went bonkers over it.

Writers claim to be more creative with it too — producing essays, jokes, and poems.

How AI Can Help You Grow Your Copywriting Business

I asked ChatGPT: “What are the two most important ways B2B writers can use ChatGPT to grow their small business?”

Here’s the comprehensive response I received:

  1. Creating high-quality, engaging content: One of the most important ways B2B writers can use ChatGPT to grow their small business is by generating well-written, informative, and engaging content that will attract potential clients and establish the business as an authority in its industry.

This can be done by using ChatGPT to generate blog posts, articles, white papers, case studies, and other types of content that will be shared on the company’s website and social media platforms.

  1. Personalized marketing: Another important way B2B writers can use ChatGPT to grow their small business is by creating personalized marketing campaigns that target specific segments of the market based on demographics, psychographics, and behavior.

ChatGPT can be used to generate personalized email campaigns, social media posts, and other types of marketing materials that will speak directly to the target audience and increase conversions and sales.

In reviewing that copy, I’d change #1 “Creating” to “Create,” and for #2, I’d begin with a verb to make both sentences balanced. I’d enliven the sentences (and not answer the question with stilted full sentences), but that copy is a good place to start from, right? And it sure beats facing a blank screen!

“A freelance writer says ChatGPT wrote a $600 article in just 30 seconds.” That was the title of an article I read a few minutes ago in Insider. [I think that’s probably hyperbole or that was a lazy writer, since the editing alone would take more than 30 seconds, but you get the point.]

Here’s another way I used ChatGPT: I have a contract to write in the mental health space for a client. Sometimes, I’m assigned work; sometimes I pitch ideas. So, I asked ChatGPT to outline an article for me on the topic I proposed. The response came up in seconds. It saved me time… and my pitch was quickly accepted.

I can now spend my precious time and resources on being creative… and writing. I’ll research, write, and tweak the AI-generated subheads as I go.

Drawbacks of AI Usage

If you jump in and play around, you’ll be pretty surprised at how human-like and good the content generated is.

But keep in mind that we still need human intelligence and creative writers to edit and finalize the finished pieces.

Here are reasons that writers should be cautious about using ChatGPT:

  • ChatGPT gives convincing-sounding responses but generates information that could be inaccurate — often you won’t know because there are no sources cited. So you’ll have to do some research to verify the sources and the information in general.
  • Sometimes content flows but makes no sense.
  • Currently, it can’t give you information after 2021. That’s difficult if you’re seeking current trends as I did for this article.
  • Without regulations in place, answers given can instruct you on how to take illegal or unethical action.
  • The technology is built on society’s current biases.
  • Google might penalize AI-generated content. (On the other hand, some say AI-written articles help you build your authority, which Google likes.)
  • Issues arise about who owns the copyright for ChatGPT-generated articles.
  • Because it’s an open-source chat box, criminals can access codes and commit cybercrimes.

So, you can’t blindly use it to write all your content and just sit back sipping tea… but it CAN help you be more efficient and productive.

Other Ways AI Technology Benefits B2B Marketers

Due to the speed in which it gathers and offers you information, here are ways to take advantage of this tool and get a competitive edge:

  1. Idea Generation: Generate clickable headlines and subheads that will grab your reader’s attention. Or simply brainstorm together to create ideas.
  2. Content Creation: After you finalize your ideas, ChatGPT can help you create and optimize the ideas, too — from blogs, case studies, and infographics to landing pages and websites.
  3. Research Assistance: I conversed with Nick Usborne through LinkedIn after he wrote a positive article about using ChatGPT. He is using it as an assistant. For example, he prompted ChatGPT to distill information from his testimonials into one cohesive summary to market his services. I intend to use it to summarize long articles and reports into more digestible summaries and for data analysis.
  4. Streamline Communications: ChatGPT can give responses to customer inquiries and Frequently Asked Questions. It can automate repetitive tasks (like email management or meeting summaries). This allows you to focus more on strategic work.

ChatGPT is a useful tool that enables writers of both copy and content to focus more on the creative aspects of the work and on business development! If you’ve haven’t yet, now’s the time to start experimenting with it.
