I've always believed that simply being helpful works wonders.
When you're always there to offer help, whether a tip, or a quick task that you can easily do (like converting an illustration to another format, or to make it load faster on a website), and you're willing to do this free if charge and quickly, people will remember you. Then, the next time they have a job that needs special care, that they know they'll have to pay for, you'll be top of mind.
It works, every time.
After a while, you've learned lots of techniques that save you time in your work, and there are all these potential clients out there who believe you can do anything.
I have gotten many "primo" jobs that way, and I often learn new skills while doing them. Then that adds to my "portfolio of skills" while satisfying & impressing those paying clients who already live me. And I've made money in the process.
