At its simplest, a blog and a newsletter are essentially the same thing. A blog is a web site and a newsletter is an email, but the content can be identical - and unless you have a good reason otherwise, it's easier to keep them aligned, as opposed to creating two separate streams of content for a client.

So when you develop a newsletter and send it as an email, post it as an update on the client web site at the same time.

Hi Michael Katz,
Thank you for great information and confirming for me that I really would like to write E-newsletters!
Question: How does a blog and e-newsletter work together? How do I decide what is for the newsletter and what for the blog? Both supply information. I have seen newsletters that contain links with excerpts from blog posts. But that doesn't supply anything new for a subscriber to the blog and newsletter.
Regards

Excellent info on writing email newsletters, although the frequency issue is a bit tricky. I publish a wildfire newsletter six days a week and have had hundreds of people I never heard of ask to subscribe, including the United Nations Global Fire Monitoring Network. The volume of information it provides free to readers in a timely manner (where are wildfires burning today?) means that people contact me within 24 hours if they haven't received today's issue yet. Future plans are to put ads into the newsletter to help pay for my time. And insofar as getting clients, I have a number who have paid me thousands to write white papers, press releases, and other material after hearing about me through the info I can provide. And two of those white papers were entered into the Congressional Record at hearings after wildfires, which is nice to be able to put on the resume :-)
